T Levels are new courses coming in September 2020, which will follow GCSEs and will be equivalent to 3 A Levels. These 2-year courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work. T Levels will offer students a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience during an industry placement of at least 315 hours (approximately 45 days). They will provide the knowledge and experience needed to open the door into skilled employment, further study or a higher apprenticeship. An industry placement will be an essential part of a T Level and full certification of the T Level will not be possible without completing an industry placement. Students will spend meaningful time with an employer applying, developing and honing the technical skills and knowledge they have learnt in the classroom, in a real working environment. Industry placements are substantially longer than traditional work experience and therefore should bring significant benefits to all involved. Industry placements are likely to take place during the second year of a student’s T Level, although providers may choose to start these earlier at their discretion.
